Created in 2002, the “Observatório da Educação” (Observatory on Education) is a program held by Ação Educativa (www.acaoeducativa.org.br) -, from the verification that public information on education, especially which circulate through the press, is guided and referred to by governments. Its central objective is to develop and disseminate consistent and plural information and opinions, so as to facilitate the advocacy and involvement of civil society actors in the definition and implementation of educational policies.

Among the specific objectives are the development of information and dissemination of analysis on educational policies. The work is based on the cooperative relationship with researchers and organizations that produce strategic information, the organization of databases and the promotion of debate about this subject.

The “Observatório da Educação” intends to intervene in the dissemination of information and views about education in media, in order to subsidize who defends rights and/or has advocacy efforts on education.

To achieve this proposed objectives, the “Observatório da Educação”:  

• helds public debates;
• systematizes the results of discussions in the news report “Desafios da Conjuntura”; 
• regularly sends materials managers of education within states, municipalities and national level and parliamentary councils of Education, including the National Education Council and members of education committees in the National the Congress;
• encourages the plurality of views through the publication of articles wrote by researchers and representatives of civil society;
• promotes workshops with journalists;
• systematically produces suggestions of subjects to be covered by  journalists and communicators from all over Brazil;
• works with the monitoring of newspapers and magazines reports about education;
• works on organization and periodic updating of a “Bank of Sources” on education.
